Kodomonokuni Theme Park, Family theme park in Yokohama, Japan.
Kodomonokuni is a family amusement park located in the Narachō and Miwamachi districts of Yokohama, covering a wide expanse of hillside and woodland. The park is divided into zones with playgrounds, a boating lake, a petting zoo, and open lawns where children can run freely.
The park opened on May 5, 1965, a date celebrated as Children's Day in Japan. The opening marked a commemoration of the marriage of Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko, and some of the wedding gift funds were used to establish the facility.
The name translates as Children's Country and reflects the Japanese approach to creating public spaces where families spend time together outdoors. On weekends and holidays, you often see multiple generations gathering for picnics or taking part in workshops designed for young visitors.
Getting there involves taking the Tokyu Corporation's Kodomonokuni Line, which terminates at the park entrance, or catching buses from Aobadai and Tsurukawa stations. The large grounds are best explored over several hours, as there are many zones to walk between.
The park is home to around 1,000 cherry trees that bloom in spring and draw particularly large crowds during that season. In autumn, Japanese maples and ginkgo trees turn the grounds into a display of warm colors that changes the entire landscape.
