Ebara Hatakeyama Museum of Art, Art museum in Shirokanedai, Japan
The Ebara Hatakeyama Museum of Art is an art museum located on a former Satsuma clan estate in Tokyo's Shirokanedai neighborhood. The building features naturally lit gallery spaces divided by traditional wooden screens displaying ancient art objects.
An industrialist named Issei Hatakeyama established this institution in 1964 to display his collected pieces. The land beneath it had served as a residential property for the Shimazu family of the Satsuma domain starting in 1669.
The collection centers on tea ceremony implements from three East Asian countries, displayed within rooms framed by traditional wooden screens. This arrangement shapes how visitors encounter the art and connects to customs still practiced in Japan today.
Visitors must remove their shoes and wear provided slippers throughout the galleries. Planning your visit in advance helps ensure you can fully experience the collection at a comfortable pace.
The site includes a traditional tea room called Tsukian where visitors can participate in actual tea ceremonies surrounded by a garden with stone lanterns. This space offers direct experience with the customs that shaped the objects on display.
