Jōetsu International Skiing Ground Station, railway station in Minamiuonuma, Niigata prefecture, Japan
Jōetsu International Skiing Ground Station is an elevated, unstaffed railway stop in Minamiuonuma, giving passengers direct access to Jōetsu Kokusai Ski Resort. It has two tracks and two platforms, with a covered waiting area and ticket machines as the only facilities on site.
The station opened on December 27, 1997, built to serve the growing flow of winter visitors heading to the slopes of Jōetsu Kokusai. Its opening followed years of expansion at the ski resort, which had been drawing more visitors since the 1980s.
The station serves as a meeting point for winter sports visitors who share a common interest in snow activities. Groups arrive here and disperse to the slopes, forming part of the seasonal rhythm that defines how people use the mountain region during the snowy months.
Tickets must be bought at the on-site machines or arranged before arrival, as no staff are present. The station is busiest in winter when the ski season is running, so arriving early in the morning helps avoid the heaviest crowds.
Although the station is only heavily used for a few months each year, it becomes one of the busiest stops on its line during the winter season. Outside of the snow season, the platforms are nearly empty, which makes the contrast with peak winter days all the more noticeable.
