Kumage district, Administrative district in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan
Kumage district encompasses three distinct municipalities: Kaminoseki, Tabuse, and Hirao, covering a total area of 151.63 square kilometers along western Honshu.
The establishment of Kumage district on January 6, 1879 marked a significant administrative reorganization within Yamaguchi Prefecture during Japan's modernization period.
Each town within Kumage district maintains distinct local identities through traditional festivals, fishing practices, and agricultural customs passed down through generations.
The district recorded a population of 42,778 residents in 2003, with a density of 282 people per square kilometer across its three main municipalities.
Following the 2003 municipal restructuring, the original town of Kumage merged with neighboring regions to form Shunan City, reshaping the district's composition.
