Museum of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii

The Museum of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii displays photographs, documents, and artifacts illustrating the journey of Japanese settlers to Hawaiian islands.

In 1999, the museum opened in a reconstructed building modeled after the 1928 Fukumoto residence, built by a returned immigrant from Hawaii.

The exhibits present personal narratives and testimonials from multiple generations of Japanese families who established communities in Hawaii since the Meiji era.

The museum maintains regular operating hours, offers guided tours in multiple languages, and includes facilities for academic research about immigration patterns.

During the official immigration period from 1885 to 1894, Suō-Ōshima contributed 3,913 people, representing 13.5% of all Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.
