Sarufutsu, Fishing village in Soya Subprefecture, Japan

Sarufutsu is a fishing village in northern Hokkaido that spans forested terrain along the Sea of Okhotsk coast. The landscape shifts dramatically during winter months when seasonal drift ice forms along the shoreline.

The village name comes from the Ainu language, meaning 'reedbed river mouth.' It became an independent settlement in 1924 after separating from a neighboring village.

The village is deeply rooted in marine life, with scallop farming woven into daily routines and the local identity of residents. You can see fishing boats and processing facilities throughout the community, reflecting how the sea defines life here.

The village is accessible via National Route 238, with Wakkanai Airport serving as the main entry point for travelers. Winter conditions are harsh, so warm clothing and careful planning are necessary for comfortable travel.

The village is known for one of Japan's largest scallop harvests, bringing considerable income to the community. This prosperity shows in modern homes and vehicles throughout the settlement, unusual for such a remote location.
