North Eastern Province, Former administrative province in northeastern Kenya
North Eastern Province is a former administrative region in northeastern Kenya covering semi-arid landscapes. Garissa functions as the main administrative center managing the territory's governmental affairs and regional coordination.
The territory was originally called the Northern Frontier District and was renamed during Kenya's independence in 1963. This administrative reorganization fundamentally changed how the northeastern region was governed.
The region maintains strong connections to Somali heritage, with ethnic Somalis forming the predominant population group according to the 2019 National Census.
The region is best explored during cooler months as temperatures can become extremely hot throughout the year. Visitors should prepare adequately and bring sufficient water due to the arid conditions.
The Chalbi Desert covers large portions of this region and creates a harsh landscape where wildlife such as lions and elephants survive in extreme conditions. This natural environment demonstrates how animals adapt to desert climates in remarkable ways.
