Mailuu-Suu, city
Mailuu-Suu is a small city in Kyrgyzstan's Jalal-Abad Region, situated in a valley surrounded by mountains along the Mailuu-Suu river. The town features simple buildings and narrow streets at about 900 meters elevation, creating a cool climate with a quiet, unassuming character.
The city was built by the Soviets in the 1950s for uranium mining to support nuclear weapons production over many decades. When the mines eventually closed, they left behind substantial environmental damage and waste deposits that continue to affect the region today.
Mailuu-Suu means 'oil water' in the local language, reflecting a long connection to resource extraction in the area. Today, residents continue their daily routines quietly, and local markets show simple goods and handmade items that reflect the town's modest pace of life.
Getting here is challenging due to limited transport options, so planning ahead and considering a local guide is advisable. The unstable terrain and landslide risk, particularly after heavy rain, require caution when exploring the surrounding area.
A new museum opened in the town in 2022 to document the uranium mining history and stories of its residents and offers visitors a chance to record memories. The project brings together locals and visitors to discuss the town's ongoing efforts to improve safety and understand how past industrial activities still shape daily life.
