The Sary-Chelek Nature Reserve spans across mountainous landscapes with seven lakes surrounded by steep cliffs and dense forest ecosystems at various altitudes.

The Kyrgyzstan government established this protected area in 1959 to safeguard the natural habitats and rare species within the Chatkal mountain range.

Local communities near the reserve maintain traditional land management practices that have influenced the development of conservation strategies in the region.

Visitors need special permits to enter the reserve, which can be obtained from the administration office located at the entrance of the protected area.

The reserve contains over 1000 plant species, 160 bird species, and 34 mammal species that thrive within its carefully protected boundaries.
