The Peam Krasop region became an official wildlife sanctuary in 1993, marking a shift towards environmental protection in post-conflict Cambodia.
Ten thousand residents within the sanctuary maintain traditional fishing practices while adapting to modern conservation requirements and sustainable resource management.
The entrance to Boeng Kayak settlement costs 5000 riel for international visitors and 3000 riel for Cambodian nationals, providing access to mangrove walks.
The sanctuary contains 23,750 hectares of mangrove ecosystem, supporting Irrawaddy dolphins and finless porpoises in its waterways.
