Mansudae Art Studio, art studio
Mansudae Art Studio is a large arts center in Pyongyang that spans an expansive area. Approximately one thousand artists from the best art schools in the country work here in various disciplines including woodcutting, painting, ceramics, and sculpture.
The studio was founded in 1959 and developed under government guidance into an institution of national importance. Under the direction of Kim Jong Il, it grew into one of the largest art centers in the country.
The artwork created here aims to showcase the nation's achievements and ideals. These pieces are displayed in public spaces like monuments and parks, shaping how the country is represented to both residents and visitors.
Visitors can purchase paintings, statues, and postcards at the attached shop. The studio also operates a branch in Beijing at the 798 Art District where a wider selection of art products is available.
The studio works internationally and has built monuments in more than 15 countries, particularly in Africa and Asia, where its large-scale sculptures shape the skyline of many cities. This global reach makes it one of the lesser-known yet influential players in international art production.
