Established in 1898, the cathedral became the central point for democracy activists during South Korea's political transformation in the 1970s and 1980s.
The cathedral holds regular Catholic masses in multiple languages, connecting international communities while serving as the main church of Seoul's Archdiocese.
Located near Myeongdong subway station exits 5 and 6, the cathedral opens daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM for visitors and worshippers.
The cathedral's brick construction method differed from traditional Korean architecture, introducing Western building techniques to late 19th-century Seoul.
