Atbasar, Rural settlement in Atbasar District, Kazakhstan
Atbasar is a district-level settlement in Kazakhstan located along the Zhabay River within open steppe surroundings. The village sits at 282 meters elevation and is framed by the flat, expansive landscape characteristic of the northern Kazakh steppes.
The settlement was founded in 1845 as a rural community and later belonged to the Atbasarsky Uyezd administrative region. That administrative district was dissolved in 1928, marking a significant shift in the area's governance structure.
The settlement shows traditional Kazakh rural life in how people spend their days and organize their work. Agricultural and herding practices remain central to the community's daily rhythm across the steppe landscape.
The settlement is reachable by narrow-gauge railway with regular service to the capital. Trips to Astana take around three and a half hours, making it manageable for day visits.
The location holds Kazakhstan's record for the lowest temperature, which dropped to minus 57 degrees Celsius. This reading demonstrates just how extreme the winter conditions can become in this part of the steppe.
