Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve

The Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve covers a vast expanse of wetlands, salt lakes, and open grasslands across two regions of Kazakhstan. The landscape features flat terrain with interconnected lake systems and grassy plains that create diverse habitats for wildlife.

The reserve gained international status in 1976 when its lake system was added to the Ramsar list of globally important wetlands. This designation helped protect one of the world's most critical stopover sites for migrating birds.

Bird watching is best from April through September, when observation platforms are available throughout the reserve. Bring binoculars and weather-appropriate clothing, as guided tours can be arranged with the reserve administration.

Lake Tengiz within the reserve attracts up to 15 million birds in certain years and marks the world's northernmost breeding ground for pink flamingos. This remarkable concentration makes it a destination that ornithologists and nature enthusiasts should know about.
