The State Russian Dramatic Theatre Maxim Gorky is a theatre building in Astana with a main auditorium featuring traditional seating rows and a fully equipped stage for dramatic productions. The building follows a conventional theatre layout and also contains smaller rehearsal and performance spaces alongside the main hall.
The theatre was founded in 1899 in Akmolinsk, the city now known as Astana, with support from local merchants and city officials. It is one of the oldest Russian theatres on the territory of present-day Kazakhstan.
The theatre stages works from Russian and Kazakh authors, giving audiences a chance to experience both traditions on the same stage. Russian-language productions play a central role for the Russian-speaking community of Astana.
The theatre is located near Zheltoksan Street and is easy to reach by public transport, as the Zheltoksan bus stop is just a short walk from the entrance. Free parking is available on site for those coming by car.
In 2008, this theatre was the only venue from the entire CIS invited to take part in an international Shakespeare season held in Beijing. That selection made it the sole representative of its region on that stage.
