Ak Orda Presidential Palace, Presidential palace in Astana, Kazakhstan
Ak Orda is the presidential residence in Astana that serves as the official seat of government and stands on the left bank of the city. The building sits in an open plaza overlooking the Ishim River with gardens surrounding it.
Construction began in 2001 as part of the new capital and was completed three years later. The opening marked the move of key government functions into the newly planned city.
The name means White Castle in Kazakh language, reflecting how the building shines across the city skyline. The large central dome recalls traditional tent architecture from nomadic heritage, blending past and present in a visible way.
Tours show the reception rooms on the ground floor, including the main hall and winter garden. Visitors should book ahead as access is limited and available on weekdays.
The facade uses twenty different types of marble from various countries for the interior rooms. A special hall inside follows the round form of a yurt, the traditional nomad tent.
