National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, National museum in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan stands in central Astana and spreads its exhibitions across several floors in a modern building with seven blocks. The halls lead through archaeology, ethnography, applied arts, and contemporary themes, with display cases and open spaces presenting the exhibits.
Construction started in 2013 after a presidential decree calling for a central home for national finds and cultural property. The doors opened in July 2014, as part of celebrations marking the capital's development and the 20th anniversary of the constitution.
The collection shows objects from nomadic craftspeople, including felt carpets, jewelry, and musical instruments that played a role in steppe daily life. Visitors also find traces of the Soviet era and early independence, making the shift in Kazakh society visible.
The site sits near the Presidential Palace and is easy to walk to from the center, with large cloakrooms available for visitors. The halls are wheelchair accessible, and tours can be divided into several sections according to interest and stamina.
One section preserves fossilized bones of giant deer and other ice-age animals found in Kazakh caves and river valleys. Other rooms show gold jewelry and wooden riding gear from burial mounds that remained untouched in frozen ground for centuries.
