Atyrau Region, Administrative region in western Kazakhstan
Atyrau Region sits in western Kazakhstan along the Caspian Sea, covering a flat area where desert landscape meets the delta of the Ural River. The territory lies mostly below sea level in the Caspian Depression and is shaped by dry plains, salt marshes, and swampy shorelines.
The area was settled by Russian traders in the 17th century, who founded a fishing village at the mouth of the Ural River. From the 1970s onwards, the discovery of major oil reserves transformed the economy and character of the entire region.
The population of 681,241 residents includes Kazakhs, Russians, Koreans, and Tatars, each maintaining their traditions while contributing to the regional identity.
Atyrau city serves as the starting point for travel through the region and has an airport as well as road connections to the main settlements. The climate is continental with very hot summers and cold winters, while spring and autumn offer the most comfortable travel conditions.
The Ural River forms a natural boundary between Europe and Asia and runs through the middle of the regional center. Residents cross between continents daily as they commute between both riverbanks.
