Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima, Karaganda, Catholic cathedral in Karaganda, Kazakhstan
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima is a Catholic house of worship in Karaganda featuring Gothic Revival style with soaring spires and detailed stonework on both its exterior and interior. The building can accommodate large congregations and contains religious artworks spanning different periods.
Construction took place from 2003 to 2012 on land provided by local authorities as a replacement for the Minor Basilica of St Joseph, which could no longer accommodate its growing congregation. The project emerged during a period of religious revival following the end of Soviet restrictions.
The cathedral serves as the central religious gathering place for Catholics in Karaganda, with regular services conducted in multiple languages for different community groups.
The cathedral is open to the public and situated in a central area of the city accessible by foot or local transport. Visitors should wear respectful clothing and remember that this is an active place of worship where services take place regularly.
International donations funded the construction and were specifically dedicated to honoring those who suffered in the Karlag correctional camps that operated in the region. This made the building serve as a memorial not just to faith but also to remembrance of difficult historical chapters.
