Ratnapura district

The Ratnapura District spans 3,275 square kilometers in southwestern Sri Lanka, containing dense forests, tea plantations, and numerous gem mining operations.

The district gained prominence over 2000 years ago when Buddhist monks from India established temples and introduced Sanskrit influences to the local language.

Buddhism represents the primary religion for 86.8 percent of the population, with temples and religious sites scattered throughout the district's eighteen administrative divisions.

The district contains multiple transportation routes connecting the southern plains to the eastern hill country, with two main highways leading to Colombo.

Numerous gem mines operate within the district using traditional methods, where workers extract precious stones including sapphires and rubies from deep pits.
