Gal Oya Dam, Embankment dam in Uva Province, Sri Lanka
The Gal Oya Dam spans 3,600 feet in length and rises 140 feet high between two hills, containing 2,000,000 cubic yards of soil material.
The construction of Gal Oya Dam began in August 1949 and concluded in 1953, marking a significant development in Sri Lanka's water management infrastructure.
The dam created Senanayake Samudra, Sri Lanka's largest reservoir, which transformed the agricultural practices of local farming communities in the eastern region.
The Inginiyagala Power Station at the dam operates four generating units with 11 MW capacity, supplying electricity to the surrounding provinces.
The dam's reservoir supports extensive irrigation networks across 100,000 acres where farmers cultivate paddy, sugarcane, chilies, and potatoes.
