Vilnius Guggenheim Hermitage Museum

The Vilnius Guggenheim Hermitage Museum was a planned art museum designed by architect Zaha Hadid, intended to stand along the Neris River. The building would have featured shimmering metallic surfaces and deep canyon-like spaces that flowed naturally into the surrounding landscape and business district.

The Guggenheim Foundation announced the project in 2008, selecting Hadid's design from three international proposals. Construction never began, and the project was cancelled in 2010.

The museum planned to display new media art, Fluxus collections, and works from both the Guggenheim Foundation and State Hermitage Museum collections.

The planned museum would have been located in an area with good access to the city center and the river. A visit would have combined a walk along the Neris with views of the architecture.

The building was designed to float above green fields, creating a link between the riverbanks and the city in a way that was innovative for its time. This fluid architectural approach was typical of Hadid's style and aimed to blur the line between nature and urban development.
