The streets and buildings of Chefchaouen feature blue-painted walls against a backdrop of mountainous terrain at 564 meters above sea level.
The city originated in 1471 when Ali ibn Rachid established a fortress to defend against Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco.
The medina contains over twenty mosques, eleven zaouias, and seventeen mausoleums, earning Chefchaouen the designation of Holy City.

Local artisans produce specific goat cheese varieties and wool garments using techniques preserved through generations of craftspeople.
