Azrou

Azrou is a mountain town in Ifrane Province situated at about 1330 meters elevation among cedar forests and traditional Moroccan neighborhoods. The streets wind through residential areas marked by local architectural styles and building patterns.

The town grew from an ancient Berber settlement but became known when French authorities opened the region's first secondary school there for administrative training. This institution represented a major turning point in the town's development.

Local artisans create woodcarvings and clay pots that you can see displayed at weekly markets alongside wool products from the Beni Mguild community. These crafts remain woven into the daily rhythm of the town and its economy.

Roads N13 and N8 meet at Azrou, connecting the town to Meknes and Marrakech, with accommodations ranging from hotels to traditional guesthouses spread throughout. The crossroads location makes it straightforward to reach as a stopover point.

The Cèdre Gouraud Forest near Azrou holds a wild population of Barbary macaques, one of the few places where these primates survive in nature. Seeing them in their forest home shows why this area matters for wildlife conservation.
