Tafilalt, Historical region and oasis in southeastern Morocco
Tafilalt is a historical oasis region in southeastern Morocco that stretches along the Wadi Ziz and features dense palm groves throughout. The area contains several fortified mud villages embedded within green zones and open desert spaces.
The region was home to Sijilmassa, an 8th century city that served as a crucial junction on trade routes from the Sahara toward the north. The area remained a center for trade and cultural exchange between distant regions for centuries.
The fortified mud villages here house families and craftspeople who maintain traditional ways of life passed down through generations. Walking through these settlements, you see how residents work with the palms and use shared spaces in their daily routines.
Erfoud is the main hub and best base for exploring the oasis and visiting local markets. From there you can reach the various villages and traverse the palm groves and surrounding areas on foot or using local transport.
The Khettara irrigation system has worked for roughly a thousand years, distributing water through underground channels beneath the oasis. Local people still maintain this ancient method today, which allows the green areas to survive in the middle of the desert.
