Haut Atlas Oriental National Park, Protected mountain reserve in Midelt Province, Morocco.
Haut Atlas Oriental National Park covers mountain terrain with dense cedar forests, pine stands, and open steppes across the eastern High Atlas range. Multiple ecosystems throughout the area support different plants and animals at various elevations.
The area received official national park status in 2005, bringing stronger protection rules for wildlife populations. This step aimed to prevent endangered species like Barbary sheep and gazelles from disappearing.
Berber communities in the mountains have shaped the land through farming methods suited to steep terrain and harsh weather. You can see traditional crafts and observe how people live in harmony with the alpine environment.
The park is best visited from May to August when weather allows for hiking and wildlife watching. Bring sturdy shoes and layered clothing since temperatures change significantly at higher elevations.
Twin lakes in the western section offer important habitat for over 100 bird species. Species such as greater cormorants and booted eagles use these waters for fishing and resting.
