Caves of Hercules, Natural cave system at Cape Spartel, Morocco

The cave complex features two distinct openings, with the sea-facing entrance displaying a natural formation resembling the shape of Africa.

The caves contain evidence of human presence dating back to 6000 BC, when Neolithic communities inhabited these geological formations.

Local Berber populations used the caves as quarries to extract stone wheels for manufacturing traditional millstones over many generations.

The cave complex stands 14 kilometers west of Tangier, accessible via national road S701 and maintained with modern electrical lighting systems.

According to Mediterranean legends, these caves served as a resting place for Hercules during his quest for the golden apples of Hesperides.
