Oued Laou, Coastal town in Tétouan Province, Morocco
Oued Laou is a small coastal town in Tétouan Province, set at the point where a river meets the Mediterranean Sea. The town has a small working harbor, a beach, and farmland stretching along the river valley behind it.
Roman sources recorded the river here as 'flumen Laud', noting it as a route used for moving goods between inland areas and the coast. The mouth of the river continued to serve as a meeting point for trade across many centuries.
Visitors walking through the town will notice fishing nets spread along the shore and small boats pulled onto the beach between trips. The market area reflects the mix of river farming and sea fishing that has long shaped daily life here.
The town is on the road between Tétouan and Chefchaouen, making it easy to visit on the way between the two cities. The harbor is most active in the morning, while the valley and farmland are best explored during the cooler parts of the day.
The river mouth forms a natural lagoon that shifts with the seasons, sometimes becoming nearly cut off from the sea by a sandbar. This changing shoreline draws wading birds that are not often seen on other beaches along this stretch of coast.
