Lake Beleu, Freshwater lake in Cahul District, Moldova.
Lake Beleu is a natural freshwater lake covering a large area in southern Moldova, with shallow depths ranging from 1.6 to 6.6 feet (0.5 to 2 meters) and spanning about 3.1 miles (5 kilometers) in length.
The lake has existed for nearly six thousand years, originating during a period when much of the Danube Delta region was submerged under the Black Sea waters.
Each year, local communities celebrate the arrival of migrating pelicans with festivals and gatherings held at sunrise and sunset, when thousands of birds fly overhead toward the Danube Delta.
Visitors can reach Lake Beleu from the nearby settlement of Valeni, which offers accommodations in eco-pensions and rustic cottages, with guided tours typically lasting around four hours starting at approximately twenty euros per person.
The lake forms part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known as the Lower Prut, emphasizing its role as a protected area for diverse bird species and wetland ecosystems.
