Brăila Bridge, Suspension bridge over the Danube River in Brăila, Romania.
The Brăila Bridge extends 6,476 feet (1,974 meters) across the Danube River with a main span of 3,675 feet (1,120 meters), standing 632 feet (193 meters) tall at its towers and carrying four traffic lanes plus bicycle and pedestrian paths.
Construction of the bridge began in December 2018 after decades of planning that started with initial studies in 1986, and it officially opened to traffic on July 6, 2023, following nearly five years of work.
The bridge represents a major symbol of modern infrastructure development in Romania, connecting the regions of Moldavia, Muntenia, and Dobruja while supporting regional economic growth and improved transportation between key urban centers.
The structure accommodates four vehicle lanes along national road DN2S, dedicated bicycle paths, and maintenance walkways, while connecting to 14 miles (23 kilometers) of new access roads that improve regional connectivity around Brăila and Smârdan.
The two main suspension cables together contain over 18,000 intertwined steel fibers weighing approximately 6,775 tons, which if laid end to end would stretch nearly 23,600 miles (38,000 kilometers), almost matching Earth's circumference.
