Castrum Arrubium, Roman military fortress in Măcin, Romania.
Castrum Arrubium is a Roman military fortress rising above the right bank of the Măcin River with a rectangular layout and views toward the Danube. The remains of stone walls are visible today and show how this site was built to defend against threats from the river.
The fortress was documented around 100 CE and served for centuries as a defense post along the Limes Moesicus, the Roman Empire's border. It lost its military role in the 7th century and was eventually abandoned.
Artifacts found here show how Roman soldiers lived daily, with weapons, tools, and personal objects from different periods. These discoveries reveal the ordinary routines of men stationed far from home.
The archaeological site is located near Măcin and can be reached on foot by following Democratiei Street toward the northwest. Informational signs at the site help guide you and explain the main areas of the ruins.
A milestone from Emperor Diocletian's era was found here, proving that an ancient road connected this fortress to other Roman centers in the region. This reveals the site's importance in a broader network of military outposts.
