Tulcea County, Administrative district in eastern Romania
Tulcea County is an administrative region in southeastern Romania covering about 8,500 square kilometers and encompassing one third of the Danube Delta. The territory is divided into 46 administrative units including 1 municipality, 4 cities, and 41 communes with their respective villages.
Tulcea County was created in 1968 during a restructuring of Romanian administrative districts. Since then it has remained an important hub for maritime and river transport.
The region is home to different communities including Romanians, Lipovans, and Roma, each keeping their own customs and celebrations alive. Visitors can experience these distinct traditions through local festivals and village life.
The region is best explored by car since towns and villages are spread across the road network. The proximity to the Danube Delta provides many gateways to boat tours and natural attractions.
The area has the lowest population density of any Romanian county, offering vast undeveloped natural spaces. This openness makes it an ideal destination for those seeking solitude and untamed landscapes.
