Enisala Fortress, Medieval fortress on limestone hill in Tulcea County, Romania.

Enisala Fortress is a medieval stone fortress on a limestone hill featuring an irregular polygonal layout. The walls follow the natural terrain and rise to approximately 10 meters at their highest points.

Genoese merchants built this military outpost in the 14th century to control Black Sea navigation and protect trade routes. Over time, different powers held the fortress and added their own defensive systems to its structure.

The fortress displays a blend of military architectural styles reflecting influences from Genoese, Wallachian, and Ottoman periods. Visitors can see this layering in the different wall construction techniques and defensive features throughout the site.

The site sits on a hill requiring a short climb to reach the remains. Limited facilities are available on-site, so it is best to check opening hours and site conditions in advance.

The fortress stands between two lakes and offers views across terrain that was once reached by the Black Sea. This landscape feature reveals how much the coastline has shifted over the centuries.
