Cetatea Histria, Archaeological ruins in Constanta County, Romania.
Cetatea Histria is an archaeological site near the Black Sea, located between Lake Sinoe and the coast. The ruins spread across a large area and show foundations of homes, baths, and public squares from different ancient periods.
Merchants from Miletus founded this settlement around 657 BCE as the first Greek colony on the western Black Sea shore. The settlement thrived for over a thousand years under different rulers before environmental changes led to its abandonment in the 7th century.
The name comes from an ancient Greek city, and today you can see remains of temples, marketplaces, and homes from different periods. These structures show how multiple cultures settled here one after another, each leaving traces in the stones.
The site has an on-site museum with discoveries from excavations including pottery, glass items, and coins. Plan your visit when the ground is dry, as wet conditions can make the paths difficult to walk.
The site clearly shows how sea levels and the coastline changed over thousands of years. Where ships once docked, dry land now stretches, making the landscape's transformation tangible to visitors.
