Great Synagogue, Moorish Revival synagogue in Constanța, Romania.
The Great Synagogue is a Moorish Revival synagogue in Constanța, located at 2 C.A. Rosetti Street with three stories and decorative interior elements. Three naves divided by columns create the main prayer space within the structure.
Construction took place between 1910 and 1914, replacing an earlier synagogue that occupied the same site from 1867 to 1872. This rebuild reflected the Jewish community's growth and development in the city during the early 1900s.
The building's Moorish Revival style reflects the diverse artistic influences that shaped Constanța during the early 20th century. Its ornamental design and interior layout once welcomed a vibrant Jewish community that left its mark on the city's religious life.
The building is in significant disrepair, with three walls remaining intact and portions of the roof collapsed. Visitors should note that restoration work was announced in 2023 and the space is not actively maintained for regular use.
A tree has taken root in the center of the sanctuary, growing undisturbed for decades since regular services ended. This unexpected inhabitant transforms the space into something between ruin and nature, creating a striking image of how places change when left unattended.
