Carol I Mosque, Muslim religious monument in Constanța, Romania.
Carol I Mosque is a prayer house with a square main chamber of about 14 meters on each side, crowned by a central dome and a slender minaret rising 47 meters high. The building blends different architectural styles and displays exterior details reflecting eastern Mediterranean design.
King Carol I of Romania ordered construction of this prayer house in 1910, completed in 1913. It was built during a period when Constanța was developing as a key port city with a diverse population.
The mosque is named after King Carol I, who initiated its construction. Inside, visitors see marble columns and ornate black doors that define the prayer space and orient worshippers toward Mecca.
You can climb 140 steps inside the minaret to reach the high platform and see across the city. The climb takes some effort, but rewards you with clear views over Constanța.
The prayer house contains a handwoven carpet from Hereke, Turkey, measuring 9 by 16 meters and weighing around 490 kilograms. This Turkish carpet is a standout feature inside and shows the skill of traditional weaving craft.
