Great Brăila Island, River island in Brăila County, Romania
Great Brăila Island is a flat territory situated between two branches of the Danube and composed almost entirely of cultivated fields and grassland. A dam system runs across the land to manage water flow and support irrigation for the farming areas.
The area was originally wetland and swampland but was transformed into farmland through large-scale drainage projects and dam construction in the 1950s. This infrastructure work made permanent settlement and agriculture possible on the island.
Two rural communities inhabit the island and maintain farming traditions passed down through generations. Residents shape the landscape through agriculture and livestock raising, following patterns rooted in rural life.
The island is surrounded by water, so reaching it requires crossing by boat from the Danube banks. Plan your visit during drier months when farm roads are more accessible.
Over 90 percent of the island consists of actively farmed land, making it one of the most intensively cultivated river territories in Romania. This concentration on agriculture sets it apart from other islands in the region.
