Ebeye Island, Pacific Ocean island in Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands
Ebeye is an island in Kwajalein Atoll made up of coral formations with dense settlements packed into a small area. It sits within a larger atoll system where multiple nearby islands are connected by a causeway.
The island came under German rule in 1885 and switched to Japanese control in 1914 before being captured by the United States during World War II in 1944. After the war, it became a center for residents relocated from other atoll islands due to military operations and nuclear testing.
The population includes many descendants of Marshall Islands residents who relocated from surrounding islands due to military activities and nuclear testing programs.
Visitors rely on boat services to reach or leave the island, as the causeway to other islands is primarily for local movement. The dry season offers better conditions for traveling and moving around.
The island maintains one radio station, Lanlin 89.1 FM, broadcasting programs in Marshallese and English to approximately 15,000 residents.
