Omelek Island, Space launch facility in Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands
Omelek Island is a rocket launch site located within Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The island has a flat terrain with military infrastructure designed to support space vehicle operations.
The site hosted five Falcon 1 rocket launches by SpaceX between 2006 and 2009. One of these flights achieved the first successful orbital flight of a privately funded liquid-propelled rocket.
The military personnel and technical staff working at Omelek Island interact with local Marshallese communities across the Kwajalein Atoll region.
Access to the island is tightly restricted and requires special authorization from military authorities. Visitors can explore outer areas of the atoll but cannot enter the launch facility itself.
The launch site was selected for its remote Pacific location, offering safety and space for experimental rocket tests. Proximity to the equator also provided strategic advantages for certain orbital trajectories.
