Bamako-Sénou International Airport, airport
Bamako-Sénou International Airport is a commercial airport terminal located approximately 15 kilometers south of downtown Bamako. The facility features a modern terminal with spacious halls, separate international and domestic sections, check-in counters, departure lounges, shops, restaurants, and prayer rooms to serve regional and international travelers.
The airport opened in 1974 to replace a smaller airfield within the city. A major renovation project between 2007 and 2012 funded by international development assistance improved its facilities and runway. A second significant upgrade in 2016 added a new terminal building, allowing it to handle more passengers and meet international standards.
The airport serves as Mali's gateway, welcoming residents traveling for work or family and visitors arriving for business. Daily activity shows how important air travel is for connecting the country with neighboring nations and the wider world.
Taxis are the main transportation option from the airport to the city, with travel times of roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey, as meters are not standard, or arrange a private transfer in advance through your hotel or travel company.
The airport shares space with a Malian Air Force base, and visitors may spot military aircraft alongside civilian operations. This dual function reflects its strategic importance for both civilian travel and national defense.
