Sélingué Dam

The Sélingué Dam spans across the Sankarani River and creates a large reservoir with considerable water surface. The structure was designed to store water and generate electricity for the region.

Construction of this facility began in the late 1970s and represented a major infrastructure project for Mali. After several years of building work, the facility became operational in the early 1980s.

The artificial lake created here supports local fishing communities and shapes daily economic activities across the region. People rely on this water source for their livelihoods and have built their routines around it.

The dam is best visited by taking time to explore and observe the broad water surfaces and surrounding landscape. The best season to visit is typically after the rainy season, when water levels are highest.

The facility was built with special water release structures to handle large volumes during intense rainy seasons. This technical solution allowed the region to maintain reliable power supply despite significant water level variations.
