Kayah State, Administrative state in eastern Myanmar

Kayah State extends across 11,731 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, featuring dense forests, rivers, and the Htee Zai Kha waterfall near the Shan border.

The region transformed from the Karenni States of British colonial times to become Kayah State in 1952, marking a shift in administrative structure.

The population of 286,627 includes the Kayah, Kayan, and other ethnic groups who maintain their traditional practices, languages, and ceremonial clothing.

Travelers reach the state capital Loikaw through domestic flights from Yangon and Mandalay or by regular bus services connecting major Myanmar cities.

The Lawpita Dam generates more than 20 percent of Myanmar's national electricity supply, making it a critical infrastructure facility in the region.
