Mon State

Mon State extends along 566 kilometers of Andaman Sea coastline between Kayin State, Bago Region, and Tanintharyi Region, with Mawlamyine as its capital.

The Mon people founded their first kingdom, Suwarnabhumi, near the port of Thaton around 300 BCE and introduced Theravada Buddhism to the region.

The Mon language, part of the Austroasiatic family, received official recognition in 2014 when the state parliament authorized its teaching in primary schools.

Mon State contains 12,155 square kilometers of land area and includes several islands such as Kalegauk, Wa Kyun, and Kyungyi along its western maritime border.

The state produces rubber, rice, and timber across 4,500,000 acres of cultivated land, while maintaining a tropical climate with temperatures between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius.
