Saddan Cave

Saddan Cave, Buddhist cave temple in Hpa-An, Myanmar

Saddan Cave is a natural limestone cavern with large stalactites hanging from above and varied stone formations throughout its passages. The cave extends through several connected chambers, creating a network of underground spaces to walk through.

The cave is connected to an old Buddhist legend about a sacred elephant that once lived within its chambers. This story shaped the site's spiritual significance and led to its use as a place of worship.

The cave holds multiple Buddha statues and gold-painted stucco designs on its walls, showing how Buddhism shapes the local community's relationship with this space.

Wear sturdy shoes since the ground inside includes concrete, rocks, and sand with uneven patches. The main path through is straightforward to follow, and you can manage the walk at your own pace.

The exit leads to a hidden lake rimmed by limestone cliffs, where local fishermen work the waters. Some sections of this lake actually sit beneath the cave itself, connecting the underground passages to an open water body.
