Bogyoke Aung San Stadium, Sports stadium in Mingala Taungnyunt Township, Myanmar.
Bogyoke Aung San Stadium is a large sports venue in the Mingala Taungnyunt Township of Yangon, Myanmar, built around a central grass field surrounded by a running track. The concrete stands rise on all sides of the field and give the place the feel of a classic stadium from another era.
The stadium was built in 1909 during the British colonial period and first served as a venue for the Burma Athletics Association. After independence, it gradually became a place for national competitions and events of greater scale.
The stadium is named after General Aung San, the national hero who led Myanmar toward independence, and his name gives the place a weight that goes beyond sport. Many visitors feel that attending an event here connects them to something larger than the game itself.
It is best to arrive early on event days, as the different entrances around the building can become crowded and finding the right gate takes time. Once inside, food stalls are available throughout the grounds so there is no need to leave during the event.
The stadium hosted the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games twice, in 1961 and 1969, making it one of the rare venues in the region to have held the event more than once. Those games were the forerunner of today's Southeast Asian Games, so the stadium is part of the origin story of one of the biggest sporting gatherings in the region.
