Yangon Zoological Gardens, Zoological gardens near Kandawgyi Lake, Yangon, Myanmar
Yangon Zoological Gardens is a zoo in Yangon, Myanmar, made up of enclosures and habitats spread across a large green area. The grounds sit close to Kandawgyi Lake and are divided into sections, each dedicated to different groups of animals.
The zoo was founded in 1906 under the name Victoria Memorial Park and Zoological Gardens, reflecting the British colonial era. It suffered serious damage during World War II and was gradually rebuilt in the following decades.
A small museum on the grounds displays preserved specimens of local wildlife, curated with input from zoology students at the University of Yangon. It gives visitors a closer look at Burmese fauna through mounted exhibits.
The grounds cover a large area, so it helps to wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time to walk through the different sections. Visiting in the cooler months makes the experience more manageable, as heat and humidity can be strong at other times.
In 2008, a large number of animals were transferred to the newly opened Naypyidaw Zoo, which noticeably changed what visitors can see here today. The collection at this location is now quite different from what it was before that move.
