People's Square and Park

People's Square and Park is a large public park adjacent to the Shwedagon Pagoda with gardens, walking paths, and marble esplanades. The grounds feature various tree plantings, bamboo varieties, and shrub beds spread throughout the entire space.

The land was originally the palace grounds of Queen Shin Sawbu and later became a golf course during colonial times. It was eventually transformed into a public park incorporating the former Parliament complex.

The Pyidaungsu Ayeyeik Nyein building displays exhibitions about Myanmar's ethnic groups, showcasing traditional crafts, wood samples, and precious stones from across the region. Visitors can explore the diverse artisanal traditions and natural resources that define the country's cultural identity.

The park is well laid out for walking with wide paths and shaded areas for resting. It is best visited in the early morning when temperatures are still comfortable.

A botanical maze winds through the park landscape with medicinal herbs and fruit trees native to the region. This hidden feature is often missed by visitors but offers a quiet spot for discovering local plant varieties.
