Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple

Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple houses a massive reclining Buddha figure with hand-painted details covering its exterior surfaces. Multiple smaller Buddha statues are positioned throughout the surrounding chambers and alcoves.

Construction of the temple began in 1899 at the initiative of a wealthy patron and was completed eight years later. The original Buddha figure was eventually replaced with a new version that remains today.

The temple draws pilgrims from across the region who come to pray and make offerings at the various shrines. Incense smoke fills the spaces as visitors move through the halls in quiet contemplation.

The temple welcomes visitors throughout the year without strict opening hours. It is customary to remove your shoes before entering the inner spaces and dress respectfully.

The Buddha figure's oversized glass eyes were custom-made by a local glass workshop and give the statue a distinctive gaze. This unusual feature immediately catches the attention of anyone entering the temple.
