Pakokku

Pakokku is a river township in central Myanmar situated along the western bank of the Irrawaddy, characterized by sandy soils and farmland enriched by river deposits. The area is serviced by multiple river ports for commerce and an airfield at Lanywa.

The settlement developed as a crucial trading hub at the confluence of the Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers, allowing it to control navigation routes downstream. This strategic position shaped the region's economic development for centuries.

Local artisans continue to extract yellow dye from acacia trees and process palm sugar using methods passed down through generations. These trades form an important part of daily work in the region.

The area can be reached by river ports or via the Lanywa airfield depending on your route of arrival. A diesel-electric plant serves the region's power needs, which is useful to know for extended visits.

The region grows a distinctive type of corn primarily for its husks, which are used to produce yawpet cheroots. This local agricultural specialty has been refined into a recognized handcraft.
