Payathonzu Temple, Buddhist temple in Minnanthu, Myanmar
Payathonzu Temple comprises three connected temple structures linked by narrow passages with detailed stone carvings adorning the walls throughout. The interior spaces feature traditional painted murals that decorate the sanctuary and passageways.
Built in the 13th century under King Narathihabar, the structure blends Mon and Burmese architectural styles. This combination reflects the cultural forces that shaped the region during that period.
The name translates to 'Three Buddhas' from the three large seated statues in the main sanctuary that pilgrims visit and honor. These figures remain central to how people use the space for worship and prayer.
Visit during early morning or late afternoon hours to avoid the intense midday heat. Wear loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and bring water to stay hydrated.
The site was never fully completed and shows construction phases spanning different periods. Lighter-colored stupas from recent restoration work stand out visibly against the original darker structures.
